Bigotry: The Dark Danger

Women should be shown the respect they deserve

There have always been misogynistic societies throughout history that inflicted both mental and physical pain on women. Although there are many verses in the Qur'an that draw comparison between women and flowers, and that show them as the world’s most beautiful blessings, we all know that violence against women is very common in Islamic countries and this violence takes its most appalling form in the name of the so-called ‘rajm’ (stoning to death). The most recent example of this non-Qur'anic and non-Islamic practice was seen in Pakistan. A young 25-year old woman named Farzana Iqbal was stoned to death by her family because she chose to marry the person she loved, instead of the person her family had picked for her. After her family filed a  case claiming that she was abducted, she went to  court to contest it but before she could make it inside, she was attacked by a mob of 20 men including her father, two brothers and the cousin  she was forcibly engaged to and lost her life  along with her 3-month baby.

This method of punishment, which takes the lives of hundreds of women every year in Pakistan and which is falsely claimed by some to be in the Qur'an, is quite widespread in many Islamic countries. Although there have been attempts to soften it or justify it with the use of phrases like ‘honor killing', etc., the world has already witnessed the horrible face of the ‘rajm’ with the movie ‘Stoning Soraya’. This movie turned into a symbol used by anti-Islamic circles. People that went to see the movie started thinking ‘If this is religion, then I’m not religious’, and stayed away from Islam as they were unaware of the compassion and mercy that God commands in the religion of Islam. However hatred, attacks, suicide bombings, and hostility towards Christians and Jews have no relation whatsoever to the morality of Islam just as the hateful, filthy , and crude people insulting women, consider them as second-class citizens and treat them with  violent methods have nothing to do with real Islam. The real source of this punishment is not the Qur'an - where true Islam is explained - but the bigoted state of mind. These bigots, because they know very well that there is no verse in the Qur'an that speaks of rajm, claim that our beloved Prophet (pbuh), who is the world’s most compassionate, merciful and loving man, ordered that punishment and that it became sunnah as a result. However, Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), who was the light of the world, only advised his brothers and sisters to repent when they made a mistake and did nothing other than what is described by the Almighty Lord in the Qur'an.

The blatantly false allegations that one woman asked to be stoned to death and that Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) obliged are only sick thoughts that reflect the state of mind of the bigots. On the contrary, this punishment is actually the murderous method of the pagans of Egypt, Mecca and Syria, and they learned it from their forefathers. The idolaters, driven mad by intense jealousy even for innocuous reasons like a woman’s looking at a man or being in the same room with him claim that a woman has committed adultery through risible and demonstrably false accusations and therefore set the stage for her horrendous murder; the idolaters, with their evil souls, have finally perfected a way to satiate their insane bloodlust applying methods like chopping up, butchering, hanging and stoning. The worst part of their evil hatred was when they decided to kill a woman in the most painful way possible by lengthening the torture through using small stones, as described herein; ‘We started in the morning to stone her, but she didn't die. We saw that she wouldn't die soon; there was a jawbone from a camel there. I killed her by bludgeoning her with it’. These statements clearly show that these people have an insatiable desire for hatred and anger. Surely, the people who did that action and said those things have no fear of God and are no real Muslims. These statements and actions only reflect the sick mentality of the bigotry, which shows Muslims under a very bad light of violence and hatred. These deranged people, who even went so far as to claim that she was purified of her sins because she was stoned to death, should never forget that they are nothing more than brutal murderers in the Sight of God. God has made it abundantly clear in the Qur'an that killing a person will be punished very severely:

As for anyone who kills a believer deliberately, his repayment is Hell, remaining in it timelessly, for ever. God is angry with him and has cursed him, and has prepared for him a terrible punishment. (Surah an-Nisa,93)

Bigots have inflicted the greatest damage on Islamic societies throughout history; however, it is equally clear that merely berating a person who doesn't even regard women as human in their own perverted way of thinking, will not work on him. Such people need true education; they need to learn Islam from the Qur'an.

In order to do away with the false beliefs that serve only to devalue Muslim societies, sincere Muslims that are sophisticated, modern, loving, peaceful, compassionate - and who have a clear intellectual stance against radicalism with the true Islam of the Qur'an and that speak for the truth - are needed.

It is clear that the only solution lies in spreading the morality of the Qur'an. In a society where people live by the morality of the Qur'an, women will not be put in compromising situations, insulted, - or worse, killed with the most appalling methods under the guise of religion.
