Our Prophet (saas) speaks of many portents of the End Times in which Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear, and specifies how one aspect of these portents will be that “they take place one after the other.” The fact that the portents of the End Times will follow one another closely is set out as follows in this hadith:

“Rasulullah said:
"… LET THEM EXPECT PORTENTS TAKING PLACE ONE AFTER THE OTHER LIKE THE BEADS OF A NECKLACE WHOSE STRING HAS SNAPPED.”

And indeed the great majority of these portents of the End Times set out by our Prophet (saas) have come about in the century in which we are living (according to the Islamic calendar). For example, the waters of the Euphrates were stopped by a dam and Halley’s Comet again approached the Earth after 76 years. Portents such as the image of a bunch of stars resembling a hand as identified by NASA, the passage past the Earth of the double-tailed comet Lulin, which resembles a horn, the Iran-Iraq War, the abolishment of the Iraqi currency, the loss of an army in the desert, a corruption of smoke and dust, unlawful things being regarded as lawful and lawful things as unlawful, lunar and solar eclipses in two consecutive Ramadans and the last complete solar eclipse of the 29th century are just a few of the signs of the End Times.

One of these portents of the End Times that our Prophet (saas) describes as a sign of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) is a rise in lightning, an electrical discharge of high tension developing between the Earth and sky. This sign is described as follows in the hadith handed down from our Prophet (saas):

“LIGHTING WILL SO MULTIPLY AS DOOMSDAY APRAOCHES THAT people will say (to one another): "WHO WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING YESTERDAY?” AND THEY WILL ANSWER, “LIGHTINING STRUCK THIS AND THAT PERSON YESTERDAY.”

One of the most interesting phenomena caused by lightning bolts was that which struck a football pitch in the Congo in 1998, resulting in the deaths of 11 players. Similarly, six people lost their lives when lightning struck a football pitch in Mexico in 2001. In addition, lightning continues to kill many people across the world and to cause enormous damage to livestock and property.
