In a report titled “Turkish-EU Relations,” Cemal Uşşak included the following statements by former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard:
“Michel Rocard's saying “Yes” to Turkey is entirely grounded in realpolitik. He lists the three main reasons as follows:
1) TURKEY HAS A VERY DIFFERENT CONCEPTION OF ISLAM TO THAT OF OTHER ISLAMIC COUNTRIES. ITS VALUES ARE VERY CLOSE TO THOSE OF EUROPE. However, Turkey also enjoys very strong and friendly relations with Islamic countries both far and near.
2) Turkey enjoys very strong and friendly relations with the countries of the Caucasus, which has the second largest oil reserves after the Middle East.
3) The Turkish Army has a very strong operational capacity."
As noted by Adnan Oktar, European leaders appreciate the Turkish conception of Islam, think it is a useful one and admit that Turkey’s position within the Turkish-Islamic world will make a contribution to the EU.
